In 2006, Simon & Schuster was poised to publish GIRL MEETS BOY, a YA anthology featuring "he said/she said" story pairs where the male and female protagonists tell their sides of a single story -- at the hands to two YA authors.
I wrote with Chris Crutcher.
Rita Williams-Garcia wrote with Terry Trueman.
Becky Davis wrote with Terry Davis
Cynthia Letich Smith wrote with Joseph Bruchac.
Sara Ryan wrote with Randy Powell.
Ellen Wittlinger wrote with James Howe.
It all looked promising, until the new VP at S&S said no more anthologies. Dead in the water.
Then Deborah Brody at Roaring Brook wanted it. A reprive, yay! Except when Deborah left Roaring Brook, GIRL MEETS BOY seemed dead again.
Then I met Herman Agency superstar Jill Corcoran on September 10, 2010. By October 14th, she'd managed to sell the anthology to Chronicle. One month later, the anthology was sold.
Yes, I think Jill is a remarkable talent, and I feel so lucky to have her on my team.
Thank you, Jill. THANK YOU.

Congrats on the anthology Kelly! Came over from D.L.'s blog where i really enjoyed your interview :)
ReplyDeleteCongrats, Kelly!
ReplyDeleteYOU and all the writers in this anthology are the amazing ones. This is one of the best anthologies I have ever read, and I am a huge anthology fan. This book will crossover to adults, so I am excited for all the teens and adults who will now have the chance to read and love GIRL MEETS BOY.
ReplyDeleteCongrats to all of you!
Wow. That sounds like quite the roller coaster ride. I'm glad to hear it worked out in the long run!
